September 11th Activity

Do Now:
Individually, please respond to the following question in your online photography journal:

• Jot down any memories you may have of 9/11, and reflect on them. If you do not have any memories of 9/11, think about what you might remember from another important time in history and reflect on that.

When you are finished, please review the following timeline and find one image, sound clip, or video that "speaks" to you. 


In groups of 3-4, you will then discuss whatever spoke to you from the interactive timeline. When you meet with your group, you must inform the other members of what image, clip, or video you chose and be sure that each of you answers the following questions:

• What made the visual you chose compelling to you?
• What made the visual iconic?

In your groups, compare and contrast other iconic images from 9/11 and other historical and contemporary events. Place these images into a Google Slides presentation. Be sure to include a slide for each image that indicates:

• The origins, its author, the story behind it, and why it resonates with you. 
• What makes the image compelling? 
• What makes it iconic?
• What makes the images you found similar or different to images from September 11, 2001?

Your final slide should include answers to the following questions:

• What do the images have in common? 
• How are they different? 
• Why are they all iconic?

Homework due next class (9/15): 

Ask a loved one about the 5 most iconic images that have had the most impact on them throughout their life. In a Google Document, try to find the images online or describe the images to the best of your ability. Explain who you interviewed and why these images impacted them.
